South Africans: How professional are we really?
09 Sept 2009
Why is
it that such a small percentage of South Africans choose to join
professional societies?
As more and more people around the world become involved in Knowledge Work,
there has been a huge growth in the number of ‘interest groups’ many of them
online, that have formed to serve the needs of people interested in specific
knowledge niches. Known as Communities of Practice (CoP), they vary from
being quite informal, to being institutionalised on a global scale.

Faculty Training Institute (Pty) Ltd is a
private training company that specialises in offering world-class
career-oriented training courses for professional knowledge workers, mainly
in the corporate world.
Faculty Training Institute (FTI):
-
Focuses at the high-end, mid-career rather
than entry-level training
-
Specialises in Project Management, Business
Analysis, Systems Analysis, Software Engineering, IT Management, and
eBusiness training
-
Offers training in a variety of options,
including public or in-house, part-time or full-time options, as well as
people skills, industry, communication and thinking skills
-
Develops and owns the intellectual property
(most of its own training material and text-books) much of which is used by
local and overseas universities and training institutes
-
Is able to customise existing material and
develop new, specialised courses to corporate requirements.
FTI was born out of the joint vision in 1989 of 5 experienced lecturers
from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town,
who perceived a gap between the technical or entry level literacy training
offered by most private training companies, and the longer 3 and 4 year
degree programmes offered by tertiary institutions.
This gap persists today, and with rare exceptions, there are few options
open to the mid-career professional seeking qualifications and training
that will further their career ambitions without attending lengthy, and
often theoretical, academic programmes.
Operating from its Head Office in Kenilworth, Cape Town, Faculty Training
Institute has expanded its successful product offerings from the initial 2
Diploma courses into a wide and growing range of Diplomas and short courses
that serve the career needs of corporate South Africa.
FTI operates mainly in the Western Cape and Gauteng, but courses
are increasingly available in other centres.
