Certificate Programme in Business Analysis

Open the door to a career as a professional Business Analyst. This world class part time program will help you master the tools and techniques of the modern analyst.

Course Overview

Business Analysts are primarily responsible for identifying the requirements of business stakeholders, and converting these requirements into specifications that will define the nature of a new business solution that will create business change. It is common that the proposed solution comprises an IT component, and the specifications will serve as a guide and instruct technical role players in the construction of IT-based business solutions.

The Certificate programme is aligned to the BABOK and covers most of the critical skills, techniques and competencies required by the professional Business Analyst. The course is suitable for both the entry-level business analyst, who needs to develop a good foundation and competence in the essential skills and techniques of business analysis, as well as the practicing business analyst, who is seeking a broader perspective and balanced view of their role.

This course does not require a delegate to actually be working as a Business Analyst and there is no requirement for delegates to complete workplace assignments based on actual BA work.

Course Objectives:

Successful delegates will:
  • Gain a good understanding of the role of the modern business analyst
  • Be able to apply many of the competencies, tools and techniques covered in the BABOK®, including Enterprise Analysis, Requirements Planning and Communication, Requirements Elicitation, Analysis and Specification
  • Be able to elicit and document functional, informational and non-functional requirements 
  • Understand and be able to produce common BA artefacts, including business cases, user requirements documents and functional specifications
  • Develop good requirements modelling skills, including being able to model processes, data, reports and interfaces


Course Delivery


The programme comprises instructor-led training seminars, supplemented by readings, exercisesand practical group work.

Various formats are available, ranging from public to in-house courses,aswellas part-time, fullday or hybrid formats.


Course Assessment


This course has a formal assessment mechanism. To obtain a pass in the Certificate Programme, delegates will need to complete and pass 2 progress tests, a class participation assessment, homework and self assessments. To pass, an overall course mark of 50% is required.

SAQA Accreditation

The CPBA is accredited with the MICT Seta and delegates who wish to obtain formal SAQA accreditation will have two options available to them:

  1. When they enroll for the CPBA, they can elect to submit a portfolio of evidence (PoE) and, if successful, they will receive three unit standards towards the National Certificate: Business Analysis qualification to the value of 50 credits. Delegates wishing to follow this option will register for the optional CPBA-POE course in combination with the CPBA at an additional cost.

    The three unit standards are:

  2. Alternatively, after completing the CPBA and acquiring some work experience as a Business Analyst, delegates can enrol for the FTI Applied Programme in Business Analysis (APBA) to complete the National Certificate: Business Analysis. Delegates following this option need not complete the PoE linked to the CPBA as delegates completing the APBA will submit a PoE covering the full National Certificate: Business Analysis qualification.

PSFA: Professional facilitation skills

  • The role of facilitation 
  • Matching types of questions to information needed 
  • Resolving conflict & Group management 
  • Planning and facilitating a workshop

CPBA06: Preparing the Business Case

  • Understanding the Business Case, Estimating effort & size, Project Costing and Benefits Analysis

CPBA07: Business Process Modelling

  • The role of modelling in Requirements definition

CPBA08: Business Rules Definition

CPBA09: Interface specifications

  • Input and output specification: Screen design, sequence diagrams, proto-types, wireframing, Usability Issues and considerations. Techniques for specifying output requirements

CPBA10: Information requirements modelling

  • Information Modelling Techniques: Logical data models, data dictionaries, glossaries
  • Modelling information requirements

CPBA11: Requirements Integration

  • Validating models for business rules, CRUD matrix 
  • Requirements Management and traceability, techniques for Integrating requirements 
  • Validating requirements

PBA12: Requirements Management and the Functional Specification

  • Documenting Functional, Informational and non functional requirements
  • Constructing the Functional spec


Course Prerequisites

Delegates must have, or be prepared to demonstrate:

  • At least 2 years working experience, with recent experience in a role that requires communication skills, business knowledge and problem solving skills.
  • Strong computer and Internet literacy 
  • Good written and verbal communications skills, and good thinking and analytical skills
  • At least a year's experience working with business applications and systems, not just as users, but in a role where they are problem solvers, super-users, developers or analysts
