Course Overview

This programme is designed as an entry level course for delegates wanting to enter the Business Analysis profession and provides a career path to occupations in many business systems environments, including systems development, systems support, business intelligence, process management and test analysis.

Business Analysis has been identified as a critical skill by the South African Department of Labour. Ultimately, this qualification is aimed at improving the productivity and efficiency of business analysts within all sectors in South Africa. The qualification may be acquired in the traditional way of formal study as well as run through a company as a learnership.

As part of the programme, delegates will be guided towards the submission of their Portfolio of Evidence for the National Certificate: Business Analysis Support Practice (level 5) and thereby obtain not only the FTI backed BAFP but also the SAQA accredited NCBASP qualification.

Course structure and duration can be customised to client and delegate requirements.

Course Objectives:

On successful completion, learners will:

  • Demonstrate strong inter-personal skills, especially in the areas of oral and written communication, presentations, facilitation, working relationships, time management, ethics and professionalism
  • Understand the structure and environment of business and the role of ICT in a specific domain  Be able to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to a real world scenario
  • Be able to generate a business case around a real world problem in their business environment
  • Demonstrate the ability to gather and record information, identify and document business requirements
  • Have mastered many of the important businessanalysis tools


Course Delivery

The programme combines instructor-led seminars with group discussions, case studies and workshops. There are also regular tests and delegates will have to prepare workplace based assignments and submit a PoE for assessment.

Course Assessment

To complete the programme, delegates will need to:

  • Complete and present a number of workplace assignments
  • Complete a number of integrated coursework exercises that demonstrate that they comprehend the theoretical content of the course
  • Obtain a sub-minimum average of 50% for the module tests
  • Be assessed on course contribution and participation
  • Obtain a final overall course mark of 50% for the programme
  • Submit a Portfolio of Evidence compiled from all of the materials developed during the course for submission and assessment by a SAQA accredited assessor

Module 1: Soft Skills for Business Analysts

  • Course Orientation and Rules of Engagement
  • Role of the Business Analyst
  • Emotional Intelligence, Presentation Techniques, Business Writing Skills & Personal Productivity

Module 2: Interacting in a Business Environment

Understanding the Business Environment; Business Strategy and the Role of IT; Systems Development Lifecycles &Business Process Modelling (Part 1)

Module 3: Preparing a Business Case

Innovative Problem Solving; Information Gathering; Requirements Elicitation; Requirements Definition; Systems Scoping; Candidate Solutions & Feasibility and Risk Analysis

Module4: Functional Specification Techniques

 Business Process Modelling (Part 2); Requirements Specification; Use Case Specification; User Acceptance Testing and Test Cases


Course Prerequisites

Applicants to the programme should:

  • Graduate qualification, preferably with a business or computing major OR
  • At least 1 years working experience in a business related role
  • While a graduate qualification and working experience is useful, it is not essential as long as the learner has strong Matric results and a high score in the course pre-assessment
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Business knowledge, communication skills and problem solving ability. While these skills will be taught and enhanced during the programme, good Matric scores in Maths or Maths Literacy, English, Accounting or Business Studies, Computer Applications Technology or Information Technology are important
  • Satisfied the following workplace requirements:
    • Active support and mentorship of their managers
    • Ready access to a PC and relevant software for course assignments
  • Completed a course application and course pre-assessment(s) to ensure they meet these pre-requisites and are in a position to derive maximum value from the programme
