Business Process Modelling

Print This Page

Develop solid Business Process modelling skills using BPMN, and use these skills in the context of Business process management and enterprise architecture

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the basic concepts of business process modelling, including the broad frameworks, standards, notations and methodologies

  • Learn how to establish the strategic and organisational bases for business process modelling

  • Scope, analyse and document as-is and to-be business processes

  • Perform a gap analysis and identify opportunities for business process improvement

  • Understand change management and implementation issues when rolling out new processes

  • Be able to derive business rules and business requirements from a BPM process

Course Overview

Analysing business processes is an essential aspect of all initiatives which are designed to achieve business improvement. It is a confusing domain, riddled with acronyms, vested interests and different standards, especially with respect to notations for process modelling. Fortunately, some standards are maturing, driven by initiatives underwritten by bodies such as the Business Process Modelling Initiative (BPMI), the BPM Group and the Object Management Group (OMG)

This course is designed to give delegates the knowledge and skills required to accurately analyse and model existing business processes and to use these models to identify areas of the business which could be improved either through automating the processes using IT systems or redesigning a process to be more efficient. Much of it is aimed at developing the thinking skills and mental framework for effective process modelling and not on specific notation or methodology.

Course Delivery

The course delivery comprises instructor-led seminars interspersed with extensive practical exercises for both the group and the individual. Group work stimulates participation and discussion.

Course Prerequisites

There are no specific pre-requisites for this course. However, in order to derive the best value from the course, delegates should have work experience that has exposed them to a varied range of different kinds of business processes. The more practical work experience a delegate has, the more effective they will be at process modelling.

Course Assessment

There are no formal assessments (exams, tests, presentations etc.) for this course. However, to earn a certificate of attendance, delegates will be required to attend both course days and actively participate in exercises and discussion workshops.

Course Accreditation

FTI was the first IIBA Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) in South Africa, and is the only EEP in SA to hold Charter Status.

Faculty Training Institute was approved as an Approved Education & Training Provider with the ISETT SETA in January 2003. FTI is currently in the process of applying for full accreditation, conditional on the future structure of SAQA and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). FTI is also actively engaged with various Skills Governing Bodies (SGBs) in ISETT to develop standards and qualifications.

This course falls into a category loosely defined by SAQA as ‘vocational short courses’ because it requires less than a year’s full-time study.
