  • How to select project staff, set objectives, motivate and appraise

Course Overview

The Diploma in Information Systems Project Management is a five-month part-time programme aimed at prospective or existing project managers who want to develop or enhance their overall project management skills. The course is also applicable to both technical and user managers who need an insight into the process and techniques of project management. Whilst there is some emphasis on the specific issues of information technology, the course is relevant to most business-oriented projects and is aligned with the Project Management Institute’s PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).

The program consists of various modules relevant to the functions of general management, project management and people management. Project management tools and techniques are taught, while key issues relating to management of people are explored.

Students will develop a variety of skills on the program, including presentation, interviewing, meeting and stress management skills. Much of the course deals with theories of general management and project management. Students are encouraged by means of discussions, exercises and assignments to adapt these theories to their own working environments, and to develop their own individual, management style

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

Duration

The course is run in a part-time format with some full-day workshops at the start, middle and end (2-3 days each). The rest of the sessions are 3-hour seminars held weekly in the evenings. In-house courses may vary in format at the clients’ discretion. Added to the classroom time is the time spent by the delegate on homework, readings, research and assignments

Delegates should ensure that their managers are aware of their intended absence during the sessions, and that their workload is scheduled accordingly.

“The success of a project will depend critically upon the effort, care, and skill you apply in the initial planning.”
Gerald M. Blair

Course Delivery

The course comprises instructor-led training, supplemented by readings, exercises and practical group work.

Workplace assignments, coupled with rich feedback, ensure that the delegate is able to apply the skills directly in the workplace.

“Project success is not the result of spontaneous combustion - you must set yourself on FIRE.”

Course Prerequisites

Successful past candidates have been drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. We do not exclude any delegate who is strongly motivated to do the course, so there are no strict pre-requisites.

However, we normally recommend that prospective delegates should not consider doing the course until they:

  • Have at least 4 years working experience in a role that requires the use of initiative, decision-making, client interaction or problem solving, or a tertiary qualification with 1-2 years work experience

  • Have at least a year’s experience working with computer-based business applications, especially on the implementation or project side

To get the most value out of the course, it should be done at the right time in a person’s career. Delegates and their companies will derive maximum benefit from the learning experience if they are able to apply the skills learnt in the workplace during the course. For example:

  • They are currently working as, or about to become a project manager

  • They have the active support of their managers (and in their home life)

  • Are working on projects that are suitable for use as course assignments

  • Have a mentor, guide or coach within the company

  • Have ready access to a PC for course assignments

“A project manager should keep one eye on the project objective and the other eye on the journey.”
Professor D Smith

Course Assessment

This course has a formal assessment mechanism. To obtain the Diploma in IS Project Management, delegates will need to complete the following assessments:

  • Two written assignments

  • A business presentation of a detailed project definition report plus the written report

  • An examination

  • Contribution and participation

Alternative assessments may apply to in-house courses.

Course Accreditation

FTI was the first IIBAź Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) in South Africa, and is the only EEP in SA to hold Charter status. This specific course is also endorsed by IIBA.

Faculty Training Institute was approved as an Approved Education & Training Provider with the ISETT SETA in January 2003. FTI is currently in the process of applying for full accreditation, conditional on the future structure of SAQA and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). FTI is also actively engaged with various Skills Governing Bodies (SGBs) in ISETT to develop standards and qualifications for business analysts.

This course is widely recognized as a de facto qualification for Business Analysts by more than 100 companies throughout South Africa.

Academically and intellectually, the course assessment is done at senior undergraduate level, which would equate to level 5-6 on the NQF.

Course Content

PPES: Personal and Professional Effectiveness

This module lays the foundation for the course. It is aimed at increasing self-awareness and raising insight towards improving personal and professional effectiveness. Delegates complete a competency self-assessment so that they have a “before” picture of their project management competence. They will complete the same assessment at the end of the course and assess their development.

PMMT: Principles of Management

Project management is a subset of management. Delegates are provided with a practical view of current management thinking with many real-life cases which they have to analyse and develop management solutions. The full day completes this module and is used to reinforce the principles using group exercises and class discussions.
Delegates will analyse and develop formal answers to case-studies.

PMPM: Principles of Project Management

These sessions present and discuss the project management body-of-knowledge (PMBOK). Delegates select a relevant project from their company and develop specific parts of their project plan each week. This is reviewed as part of the evening sessions.

CMPS: Presentation Skills and Presentation of Project Charters

Midway through the PMPM module, delegates meet for two full days to learn and practice presentation skills. They receive feedback from the lecturer as well as from fellow delegates. A week later, delegates meet for a full day session to present their project charters.

PMMA: Managing People

This module focuses on the people aspects of projects including staff selection, objective-setting and staff appraisal, staff motivation and team-work. Managing HR issues on a one-on-one basis is emphasised. Delegates analyse their own companies’ HR processes and formally present these to the class on the 2nd day. The project plan is enhanced with the necessary people management activities prior to the final presentation.

Final Presentations and Course Wrap-Up

Delegates present their final detailed project plans (project definition reports) to two assessors and also hand in the written detailed project plan.
The course ends with a lessons learned session and a course evaluation followed at a later stage by a formal graduation
