Practical TOGAF™
Enterprise Architecture
Organizations world wide are under tremendous pressure to produce better results, cut costs, introduce products and services more quickly and achieve this with reduced risk, sound governance and transparency. They recognize that the discipline of Enterprise Architecture can help them to transform their businesses and align their I.T. endeavours with their business initiatives while taking advantage of technology to achieve greater agility and efficiencies. Enterprise Architecture (EA) covers the domains of Business, Process, Applications, Information and Technical Infrastructure, as well as how these all interact to deliver results. In addition, cross cutting concerns of risk, cost and quality of delivery are often addressed to ensure that these receive attention across the board. Enterprise architects, particularly those certified in TOGAF™, are in great demand worldwide and frequently command salaries close to those of the CIO.
TOGAF ™
The Open Group is a worldwide collaborative of end user organizations and I.T. product and service providers that promotes standards to facilitate achieving benefits and ease of interoperability within and between organizations. Following early work funded by the US Government, a series of standards was evolved, with significant input from many industry contributors ultimately resulting in The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF™) – now at release 8.2 (TOGAF™ 9 is due next year). TOGAF™ comprises a number of components, including: a comprehensive Architecture Development Method (ADM); A Standards Information Base; a number of Reference Models and the concept of managing the Enterprise Continuum – a repository of useful architectural building blocks and solutions. TOGAF™ has gained ground rapidly and is now the mostly widely accepted method for doing EA based upon recognised standards. The Open Group manages the evolution of TOGAF™ and certifies practitioners, training courses and tools.
Inspired/Promis Solutions

Inspired, now part of Promis Solutions AG, has been delivering leadership in consulting, frameworks, models, training and software tools focused on the EA space since the early 1990's. Experience includes implementation with major finance, assurance, retail, telecommunications, manufacturing, media, healthcare, hospitality and government clients locally and abroad. Unique integrated meta models have been developed that support multiple frameworks, including TOGAF™, Zachman, DODAF, IAF, Inspired and others. TOGAF™ Certified collaborative enterprise modeling and knowledge management tools have been developed and are now marketed worldwide. Inspired has TOGAF™ certified consultants and instructors and developed the Practical TOGAF™ course which is certified by the Open Group.
Course Introduction
The course covers the body of knowledge required for TOGAF certification. Successful candidates will be registered via the Open Group as certified TOGAF™ Architects, becoming part of a select international community. Advantages of this course include:
- Our training goes beyond the typical TOGAF™ certification training which just covers the body of knowledge from the TOGAF™ manual
- We have 20+ years experience in the Strategy/EA space to bring to the material
- We have created a fully integrated meta model (which TOGAF™ lacks) to allow us to achieve deep support for all TOGAF™ models and viewpoints within our tooling, which is Open Group certified
- The course is extremely practical:
- Extra time (full five days) to allow for 13 practical assignments
- An in-depth real world based case study shows application of techniques through a typical architecture implementation lifecycle
- Instructors are EA experts who have delivered for real in client situations for over a decade..
- We provide additional material over and above TOGAF™ to orient delegates to EA and modern architectures, such as SOA
- We have 30 years experience of designing effective training and delivering it. This expertise has been applied to the course design to ensure effective learning.
Duration
5 days of full-day training
Target audience
Typical candidates would include those already working in the EA discipline and wanting to achieve an internationally recognised qualification. Others would be currently working in a senior I.T. or business analysis capacity and wanting to move into an EA role. Those who have had previous exposure to management (including program, project and portfolio management) and to modeling techniques (as used in business, information and systems analysis) will typically be at an advantage. IT managers and CIO's who need to initiate or manage an EA function will also benefit tremendously. Finally, consultants in outsourcing, ERP implementation and technology infrastructure advisory roles will also benefit.
Course Delivery
This course combines instructor-led seminars and group work built around a comprehensive case study, enabling participants to practice the tools and techniques covered. Group work stimulates participation and discussion. Throughout the course, delegates are encouraged to share their own personal experiences and concerns.
Practical exercises, both theoretical and ”real life”, which will ensure that the knowledge gained is both transferred and instilled. A comprehensive case study (synthesised from several real world projects) is used to illustrate principles and techniques.
TOGAF™ is made practical through the exposure to the lifecycle of an EA implementation and production of typical deliverables.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, delegates should be able to:
- Understand the benefits, role and scope of EA
- Market the EA discipline within an organization
- Discuss the typical path to implementation of an EA capability
- Identify the various stages of an EA method and lifecycle and the purpose and outputs of each of these
- Plan an EA project at a high level
- Discuss who the stakeholders are in the EA process and what viewpoints are relevant to each
- Prepare key deliverables for selected phases in the ADM life cycle (Note: it is beyond the scope of the course to teach detailed modeling techniques in all areas)
- Discuss the various reference models in TOGAF™ and their applicability
- Show an understanding of the Enterprise Continuum and the role of a repository
- Use the concepts of building blocks to facilitate interoperability and reuse
Course Prerequisites
Successful candidates can come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences. We do not exclude any delegate who is strongly motivated to do the course, so there are no strict pre-requisites. We do not recommend the course for junior personnel. You should have at least 5 years working experience or University level qualifications and have had exposure to I.T. and business. Candidates should already have, or be motivated to move into, a role which requires enterprise level architectural thinking and responsibility.
Course workload
The core course content is covered during the full day sessions. There may be preparatory reading or overnight review required. This should not exceed one hour on any given day.
Course Assessment
Students will learn by experience and assessment of others. To complete the course, delegates are required to
- Attend the full course
- Actively participate in the exercises, discussion & feedback
Assessment is by observation of individual and group work output. Certificates will not be issued to delegates who do not attend the sessions, or who decline to participate in the course work. Candidates that do not meet the requirements for TOGAF™ certification will not be registered via the Open Group. If unavoidable circumstances were to blame for non-achievement, they may be allowed to participate in a future course at a reduced fee.
Costs and terms
The cost of this course is available on request. Discounts apply for large numbers or in-house courses. Course fees cover tuition, materials, notes and catering. All fees are payable in advance and interest is levied on overdue accounts. Please refer to the standard terms and conditions on the course confirmation form.
Course Venue
Public training is conducted at FTI’s premises in Cape Town and Johannesburg. In addition, we rent temporary external venues in other areas as we need them. Most in-house courses are held on company premises and we will provide assistance regarding venue requirements to ensure the quality of our course is not compromised.
Course Accreditation
The course complies to the requirements for TOGAF™ Certification training and is recognised by The Open Group. Successful candidates will be registered as Certified TOGAF™ Architects via the Open Group. The cost of this is included in the course fee.
