Skills Programme

The Project Management Essentials (PME) Skills Programme will introduce you to the fundamental principles and techniques of Project Management. This engaging and interactive Skills Programme is designed to give you simple and effective tools to plan, control and organise different types of business projects.

FTI is accredited with the Services SETA to offer the Project Management Essentials Skills Programme.

Who should attend?

This programme is aimed primarily at entry level Project Managers and Project Co-ordinators needing theoretical and practical Project Management skills. It is most relevant to Line Managers, who need to be more effective in delivering change, meeting deadlines and managing groups using a project management approach.

Course Information

Entry Requirements

You will need:

  • A Grade 12 Certificate
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4, or equivalent
  • Communication at NQF level 4, or equivalent
  • Computer Literacy at NQF level 3, or equivalent
  • To be working in or with project management teams or using a project approach to your work. These projects can be technical, business, public sector or community development type projects, across a range of economic sectors.

Delivery and Assessment

We use a blend of face-to-face, facilitator-led training sessions as well as group discussions, practical exercises and feedback sessions, to embed knowledge and skills. You will attend four training days in two months and then have two months to complete a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE). You will need to:

  • Attend all four days
  • Participate in and contribute to group discussions and activities
  • Practice a range of project management techniques and simulations to be able to apply them in the workplace
  • Do some individual reading and self-study
  • Complete workplace assignments and submit for formal assessment
  • Compile, submit and be found competent on a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)
If found competent you will receive two South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) unit standards:
  • SAQA ID 243824, 8 credits, Level 5 ‘Develop an integrated Project Management plan for a simple to moderately complex project’
  • SAQA ID 15224, 4 credits, level 5 ‘Empower team members through recognising strengths, encouraging participation in decision making and delegating tasks’

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this Skills Programme, you will have a good understanding of the main project management tools and techniques. You will be able to:

  • Understand the role of different stakeholders in a project and how they view project success
  • Define a project and set measurable and clear objectives
  • Break projects into manageable components through estimating and scheduling tasks
  • Determine and allocate resources for a project
  • Understand and plan for uncertainty
  • Manage, monitor and make adjustments to a project
  • Recognise the importance of and develop key interpersonal and core skills such as problem-solving, communicating, building relationships and managing change.
